Putting the ‘Real’ in Real Estate: Government and Housing Crisis

Article Summary:

  • The housing crisis is biting harder, with young adults being particularly affected. Not moving out of their parents’ basements anytime soon it seems!
  • The government seems to be pretty laid-back when it comes to solving this issue. Maybe they didn’t get the memo?
  • Despite the demand for more affordable housing, the supply is, well, let’s just say it’s less enthusiastic.
  • Experts argue that a one-size-fits-all solution isn’t feasible. Every region has different issues, which means different solutions. Kinda like ordering a customized sub sandwich, no?
  • Limited government interventions before have resulted in questionable success. Let’s just say, on a school report card, it would read, “Has potential but needs further improvement.”

Just A Center-Right Guy’s Take:

It looks like the government, like a distant father who only remembers his children’s birthdays after being reminded by mom, seems to have forgotten the ongoing housing crisis. Young adults are struggling to escape their parent’s basements, and it doesn’t seem like their escape rope is coming anytime soon.

The reduced supply of affordable housing is more of a starved Chihuahua than a healthy French Bulldog. But hey, let’s not spoil the day talking about the grim and the gloomy.

Some experts argue there isn’t a silver bullet solution. Fair point. It’s like expecting everyone to like pineapple on their pizza. (I personally don’t. Sue me.) The housing problem differs from region to region, so the solution should as well.

And about the limited government intervention? Well, it reminds me of my high school PE days. I, too, participated… minimally. Let’s hope the government decides to run the extra mile soon to win at this game of affordable housing crisis.

Here’s a novel idea: maybe the government can start by making the process of building new homes less bureaucratic. Less red tape, more ribbon cuttings, maybe?

Let’s see who will buckle down and get serious about tackling the housing crisis. In the meantime, our young adults might as well invest in making those basements comfortable. Could use a bean bag or two, right?
